Pre KickOff meeting

  • Date: Wednesday, June 6, 2018 - 09:00 to 16:00
  • Venue: 102 Boulevard Carl-Vogt, 1211 Genève, Switzerland

Summary

WeObserve launched its first three Communities of Practice on 6 June 2018 at the University of Geneva, during dedicated sessions on the Citizen Science Workshop Day of the 2nd International ECSA Conference.

The WeObserve CoPs will serve as the vehicle for sharing information and knowledge on selected key thematic topics related to Citizen Observatories (COs), strengthening the knowledge base about COs in order to move citizen science into the mainstream of environmental management and decision making. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders on the consolidation of knowledge in the field of citizen science and COs

The 3rd CoP is about "Interoperability and standards for citizen observatories". The centra topic was the "Kicking off first Interoperability Experiment on Citizen Science under the OGC"

This workshop launched CoP3 “Interoperability and standards for citizen observatories" by organizing the pre- kick off of the first Interoperability Experiment on Citizen Science under the OGC In the session we had 2 dedicated groups discussing on:
  • data integration among citizen science projects using SWE4CS,
  • metadata standards for describing citizen science projects.
There was not enough people interested in a discussion on "integration of citizen science projects/campaigns in Single Sign-On system (SSO) federation" so it was postponed to the actual kick-off.

Become part of the action and contribute to start the first Interoperability Pilot of this CoP during the launch workshop! The experiment will conduct its activities for about 6 months after the launch event.

Background

WeObserve is a EU-funded H2020 Coordination and Support Action which tackles three key challenges that COs face: awareness, acceptability and sustainability. The project aims to improve the coordination between existing COs and related regional, European and international activities. The WeObserve mission is to create a sustainable ecosystem of COs that can systematically address these identified challenges and help to move citizen science into the mainstream. In order to consolidate practice-based knowledge on COs that is dispersed among various stakeholders, WeObserve is launching and coordinating dedicated Communities of Practice (CoPs) as a key mechanism for consolidating the knowledge inside as well as beyond the WeObserve consortium.

In total, WeObserve will develop five CoPs over the course of the project. The first three CoPs will be launched at the Citizen Science workshop day at the University of Geneva on 6 June 2018. The CoPs are intended as a key mechanism to consolidate knowledge on COs inside as well as beyond the WeObserve consortium. As such, a wide range of stakeholders who are already involved in citizen science and citizen observatory initiatives is invited to take part in the CoPs, such as public authorities (local, regional, national, EU), civil society organisations, research and academia, citizens and citizen science working groups. Activities that the CoPs will undertake include thematic knowledge co-creation, generating new solutions or agreeing on how to use existing ones, and knowledge sharing activities (meetings, events, conferences).
