Description
Public transport runs efficiently when it operates as a seamless, integrated system. This is particularly important in fast-urbanizing economies such as China and India, where public transport must increasingly compete with privately-owned cars, said Ke Fang, a lead urban transport specialist of the World Bank and co-author of
Public Transport Service Optimization and System Integration.
User Story Description
Emma wishes to visit her mother at a hospital all the way across town. Using a mobile phone app, she notifies the transport system of her intention to travel from her house to the hospital. She receives a confirmation message directing her to a minibus pick up point.
Daniel, a minibus driver in Emmas local area routes his passage from the terminus to the MRT. The calculated route sends Daniel to 3 stops, where he picks up 6 passengers who all swipe their SMART Cards, including Emma, and fill up the minibus. Along the way, Daniel reaches roadworks, where he is forced to take a detour. A number of other minibus operators are directed to the same detour. Each minibus uploads its route information to a transport authority.
Emma walks to her MRT stop, swipes her SMART Card and boards the MRT riding it for 30 minutes and connecting to its Wi-Fi network to check her emails whilst she travels. Once she reaches her destination stop, she hops off and makes her way to a bike rental rank using her SMART Card to unlock the bike that was allocated to her based on balancing out bike usage. She cycles for 10 minutes to the bike rental rank at the hospital.
After 15,000kms, Daniel is notified that his minibus requires maintenance, so he takes it back to the terminus and swaps it for another bus.
Once there are a reasonable number of bikes that have travelled 1000kms at the bike rental rank, a bike mechanic is sent out to the hospital to perform maintenance.
After a few hours, a large number of routes are used to detect detours and create alternative routing, allowing minibus operators to take advantage of Daniels route information.
