Questionnaire on the use of WMS in meteorology and inter operability experiments
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) recently established a Meteorology Domain Working Group (and a Hydrology Domain WG) to provide a focus for the application of the OGC standards and profiles to meteorology. The OGC is also pursuing a Memorandum of Understanding with WMO to allow mutual representation of experts at their respective meetings.
The initial plan of the Meteo DWG is to perform Interoperability Experiments with the OGC Web Mapping Services (WMS) standard between June and December 2009, as recommended at the OGC - ECMWF workshop in November 2008. The intent is to produce an agreed OGC WMS profile for meteorology, or possible changes to the WMS standard. Such a profile should help improve global inter-operability with the wider geospatial community as well as "intra-operability" within the meteorological community.
This should also help reduce the cost of implementing operational and research systems.
We would like you to take a few minutes to fill in the questionnaire, so that the MDWG can measure the interest in, and identify any volunteers for, these Inter-operability Experiments.
Please expand upon your answers if you would like to supply more information.
The initial results from the questionnaire have been presented :
- at the European Working Group on Operational [Meteorological] Workstations (EGOWS) 2009 Conference beginning of June 2009 in the Netherlands.
- at the OGC Technical Conference in Boston in the USA.
It formally closed on 1st September 2009 and an analysis was be presented at the OGC Technical Conference in Darmstadt, Sept 2009.
Since then, a few other entries have been made, but not substantially altering the conclusions.
