Minutes of Telecon 10 January 2011

Attendees

  • Stephan Siemen (ECMWF)
  • Sandor (ECMWF)
  • John Schattel (NWS),
  • Adrian Custer (Geomatys),
  • Marie-Francoise Voidrot (Meteo-France)

Proposed Agenda

  1. Return of experience on current IEs
  2. Update on the works going on via the email list and the twiki on CRSs
  3. Other issues
  4. Next Telcon

1) Return of experience on current IEs :

John has tested the NOAA WMSs servers with two "off the shelf" clients : UDIG and GAIA. No problems detected but he suggests we should develop some metrics to qualify an interoperability level or quality. (ACTION) Marie-Francoise will provide a graphic on the twiki to visualize the coverage of the testings in term of combinations clients x servers (ACTION) John will describe the type of servers (ARCGIS / webserver...) used for the NOAA's servers. (ACTION) Météo-France have tested a UCAR server providing GFS outputs. The URL will be added on the twiki but it encapsulates the date of the run into the URL. (ACTION) So only an example of URL will be provided that will have to be updated by the users. This makes it difficult to handle via the client. The MetOcean profile should recommend to avoid that. (MET OCEAN PROFILE)

2) CRSs :

The 2D CRSs specific to Met Ocean purpose are more or less identified and could be added to WMS 2.0 spec.

They were some discussions on the email list around the multiple dimensions or compound CRSs : Should we stick to 2D CRSs and use the ELEVATION DIM and TIME or to towards multiple dimension CRSs?

With the first scenario, WMS stays simple but not homogeneous with WCS works. The second option could allow homogeneous solutions between WMS and WCS but will raise complexity at a level maybe not necessary for WMS implementations.

The two scenarios should be evaluated. (ACTION)

3) Other issues :

The need to get Metadata attached to the WMS is being discussed within the WMS1.4 SWG. Adrian has reorganised the WMS twiki to make it simpler. It should be discussed in Bonn. (ACTION)

Chris is discussing with WMO the idea to publish styles on Wikimedia (ACTION)

The EGOWS conference could be hosted by Meteo-France (to be announced). (ACTION) It could host an interoperability experiment. Adrian suggests to identify a combination of servers/layers to be tested or to encourage the servers providers to publish the same parameters (for instance MSLP at 00HH) to set this experiment. (ACTION)
